I rented your one-minute caricature on Amazon and was amazed on how quickly my skills increased. I can't thank you enough. As an editorial writer for our local paper, the skills I have learned from you will add tremendous value to my work. I just bought one of your DVDs from you website and can't wait to continue my improvement. - Mike from Iowa
On Animation
I moved to Los Angeles in my early thirties. I was making a living drawing caricatures at theme parks and parties up until then. An opportunity presented itself to learn how to animate at the Animation Guild Union located in North Hollywood, Ca. Luck had it that Disney was hiring for the "Little Mermaid" and I got my first job as an inbetweener for Disney.
Since then I have worked at Warner Brothers and Sony Animation and now at Dreamworks Animation. Past projects include The Iron Giant, Osmosis Jones, 8 Crazy Nights , Stuart Little 2, Shark Tale, Over the Hedge, Kung fu Panda, Monsters vs Aliens, and Kung Fu Panda 2. I presently reside in Santa Clarita, Ca and have 3 kids.
On Caricaturing:
Growing up, I was always interested in drawing. As with most artists, we start at an early age. I loved drawing cartoons at first, until I happened to see a Norman Rockwell illustration on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post. I especially loved his portraits. I practised to draw more realistically . It was not until I played around with acting in the 8th grade that I discovered caricatures. I was in a play and I had to create this character. It was a comedy so I had to find the humor in the character and in the delivery.
One day I started to notice my teachers as fully realized comic characters that could be mimicked. Their facial features arranged themselves into funny designs, emphasizing their standout features. I played around with drawing them in simplified shapes with their recognizable features and showed them to my classmates.
When it received howls of laughter and recognition, I was hooked on drawing caricatures and remained so ever since. Here at last was an art form that communicated clearly, eliciting a strong reaction. So I worked at perfecting the technique of drawing to capture “character”. These educatuional products are a review of the discoveries that I have gleaned from my own findings and from other caricaturists whose paths have crossed mine. I share this compilation of ‘data” with you, the next budding caricaturist.
Let me know what you think about my products, artwork or animation. I am always glad to hear from you and will do my best to reply in a timely manner!
